A friend of mine was in the checkout line at the grocery store in early Lent. Behind her stood a woman and a little girl, who was loudly insisting on a candy bar from the ever-tempting display case. Not today,” the woman told her. “It’s Lent, and we give up candy for Lent.” Then she turned to my friend and somewhat sheepishly confessed, “Actually, she’s not mine, and she’s not even Catholic. But I figure if it’s good enough for us, it’s good enough for her.” Giving up. Is that what it’s all about? Or does giving up have a greater purpose? Could it be that by giving up we find we actually have more to give? Click on the cross to hear this Lenten message from our new Holistic Stewardship Team!
