Last Sunday, our gospel text shared the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 with a boys offering of bread and fish. Apparently not satisfied by Jesus’ feeding of thousands, some who were there press him for a sign of his power; perhaps it is daily manna they want. As always in John’s gospel when people want a miracle, Jesus offers something more. The miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fishes is not just a miracle but a sign – a sign that points to Jesus, who calls himself The Bread of Life. The bread the crowd ate that day was not just bread. The bread we share at communion today is not just bread because Jesus is the bread come from heaven to give life to the world. He calls us to come to him and believe in him, and through that relationship to know the one who sent him. In Jesus, God gives bread for the journey—not only for this life, but also into eternal life.
