By Heart is a richly illustrated, in-depth exploration of the Small Catechism. This class will generate meaningful conversations about the biblical and historical context of the Small Catechism, its link to the church’s faith, and its connection to Luther’s life and your life today. Join us for this 6-session course that will be engaging for both longtime Lutherans and those new to the faith as well.

October 25/26 – Introduction & The Story of the Small Catechism

This week we explore the impetus behind Luther’s Small Catechism, the importance of being a disciple/learner, and why the catechism is still a hallmark of the Lutheran faith 500 years after its writing. November 1/2 – The Ten Commandments

This week we explore the Luther’s explanation of The Ten Commandments, how they take our faith deeper (rather than forward or up), and why the catechism is still a hallmark of the Lutheran faith 500 years after its writing.  For 11/1 & 11/2 read Chapter 2: The Ten Commandments

November 8/9 – The Apostles’ Creed

This week we explore the Luther’s explanation of The Apostles’ Creed, why it is more than a statement of belief, and why the catechism is still a hallmark of the Lutheran faith 500 years after its writing. For this week read Chapter 3: The Apostles’ Creed.

November 15/16 – The Lord’s Prayer

This week we explore the Luther’s explanation of The Lord’s Prayer, why we can pray it “boldly and with complete confidence,” and why the catechism is still a hallmark of the Lutheran faith 500 years after its writing. For this week read Chapter 4: The Lord’s Prayer

November 22/23 – NO CLASS – THANKSGIVING

November 29/30 – The Sacrament of Baptism & Confession

This week we explore the Luther’s explanation of Baptism, why it is all about God and God’s action, and why the catechism is still a hallmark of the Lutheran faith 500 years after its writing.  We will also learn why Confession was considered a sacrament at the time of the Reformation and its important link to the daily renewal of the baptismal promises. Read Chapter 5: The Sacrament of Holy Baptism & Confession

December 6/7 – The Sacrament of the Altar

This week we explore the Luther’s explanation of Holy Communion, why it is a simple meal with complex meaning, and why the catechism is still a hallmark of the Lutheran faith 500 years after its writing.  Read Chapter 6: The Sacrament of the Altar

Final Chapter (No Class)

Chapter 7 explores Luther’s explanation of the Daily Prayer and Household Chart, why it is important to pray at home as well as at church, and why the catechism is still a hallmark of the Lutheran faith 500 years after its writing.
