Care of Creation Fair
March 7, 2026
It was a dark and stormy morning. Team members gathered at church. It was Care of Creation Fair day and the Care of Creation team was a little dejected. But hope springs eternal, so they got busy adapting an “outside” fair into an “inside” fair.
8:00 – Thunder clapped, the rain approached, and inside volunteers set up tables and attached banners identifying each of the 32 participating organizations scheduled to arrive at 10:00. The Welcome table got organized at the front doors – registration and flyer info, treasure hunt map and gift bags, raffle tickets, raffle prizes, and carry bags – waiting for the public. The fair entrance and Upper Room were ready, and the Fellowship Hall was lit up with festive string lights and lanterns. Wow! It was beautiful! Now if the participants would just decide to come despite the rain…

10:00 – a few booth presenters began to arrive and were escorted upstairs to their tables: Native Plant Society, Travis Co. Master Gardeners, Bull Creek Foundation, Austin Bat Refuge.

10:30 – more participants! Homegrown National Park, Sierra Club, Wildfire Preparedness, El Camino Real de los Tejas Historic Trail Association, Water to Thrive, Resurrection Garden, A Rocha, and pretty soon, all but one of the 33 booths were set up and staffed…

…and the final one eventually made it through the rain, too. Amazing, Lord! Energy was high, with a total of 67 volunteers working to make this Fair a success. Now if people would just brave the rain and enjoy this celebration of caring for God’s world…
11:00-2:00 – 121 people came to the fair! Thunder, dark skies, heavy rain, but the Care of Creation team was giddy with astonishment and thanks. Energy filled the entrance and upstairs. Kids hurried to complete their booth scavenger hunts, and learned new things at the same time, along with the adults, volunteers and visitors alike. Did you know Nandina berries contain cyanide that are toxic to several bird species? Or that the little creek behind our church property flows into another creek that reaches Lady Bird Lake? Or that bees need water sources to work their pollinating miracles (keep your bird baths clean with fresh water!)?

Don’t miss our fair next spring whether it’s inside or out. This year, in the end, it didn’t seem to matter to anyone that we were holding a “creation” fair inside a building. The learning and excitement happened anyway. Thanks be to God!
