April 22nd is Earth Day, which began in 1970 as a way of raising awareness of environmental concerns. Today over 190 countries participate in Earth Day activities. As Christians, we believe that God created all things (Genesis 1-2), and because of this we are intimately connected not only to our family and friends, but to all of creation and our Creator. In 1993, the ELCA published a social statement entitled “Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope, and Justice.” One line in the document sums it up well: “Made in the image of God, we are called to care for the earth as God cares for the earth.” May our worship today rekindle this call and encourage us to be good stewards all throughout the year.
