This Sunday we hear the familiar Love Command: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” As much as I love the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” (you can hear more about that in my sermon this week), one of my favorite songs to sing with children is “We Love”
We love because God first loved us (clap, clap)
We love because God first loved us (clap, clap)
We love (clap, clap) We love (clap, clap)
We love because God first (clap) loved (clap) us (clap, clap)
We sing it loud and deep with big sweeping claps using our whole arms. Then we sing it in a light, barely audible whisper with tiny claps using just our pointer fingers. The kids love it and so do I! Both versions remind us of God’s love that comes to us in large, sweeping grand gestures and that comes to us in smaller more subtle ways. And in turn, Jesus calls us to love others with this same love. So what are some ways you have experienced love in a grand way and in small ways? How have you shared love – both sweeping and subtle? How have you shown love to your mother as we celebrate Mother’s Day? How have you shown love to those unlike you or those more difficult to love? May we all reflect God’s love this week!
The scriptures for this 6th Sunday of Easter are 1 John 5:1-6 and John 15:9-17. As Jesus gives the Love Command, bring a symbol of God’s love to your worship space!
