July 14, 2024 – Week 1
We are called to be disciples, which actually means followers. In our daily living we are called to be followers of Jesus. That’s not easy. Micah, however, explains in succinct language what is required of us. We are to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. These three requirements are deeply linked and represent the basic foundation of the Christian life.
Often when we hear the words “act justly,” we think about justifying ourselves. We want to present ourselves to others in such a way that we appear to be in good standing with God. “I try to be a good Christian” is how it frequently sounds. Justice from God, however, is about God looking at us with His love and hope and mercy. When we “act justly,” we “do” justice by our loving words and actions towards others.
This takes us to the second requirement, “loving mercy.” We love mercy because mercy is what we receive from our loving God. In exchange for the mercy we receive, we can become mercy for those we see each and every day.
Finally come the words which I love so much: “Walk humbly with our God.” As with justice, humility is an action. We are to walk humbly with God, not running ahead, not standing still.
These three things are required of us because together they keep our focus on Christ.
