Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence (1 Kings 19). When the disciples face a great storm on the sea, they cry out with fear. Jesus says: “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid” (Matthew 14). Amid the storms of life – a new school year, devastating medical news, or a divorce, we gather to seek the calming presence of Christ that soothes our fears. When we have “that sinking feeling” Christ buoys us through the gift of the church. In community, comforting words of scripture, the renewing waters of baptism, and in the refreshing bread and cup of the eucharist, God grants us peace that surpasses all understanding and sends us forth to be a courageous sign of God’s presence to others.
This Sunday we pause in the midst of the “Back to School Storm” for a Backpack Blessing to remember that God is with us – children, youth, parents, educators, congregation – and blesses for the year ahead. In community, comforting words of scripture, the renewing waters of baptism, and the refreshing bread and cup of the eucharist, God grants us peace that surpasses all understanding and sends us forth to be a courageous sign of God’s presence to others at school and home, in the community and the world. Join us this Sunday for an ichthys keychain for your backpack, briefcase, purse or laptop bag!
