When Things Fall Apart

This time of year we find ourselves in a bit of turbulence caused by competing fronts. The secular calendar is careening toward Thanksgiving and Christmas while the church calendar is preparing for the end times and Advent. We’re in for a bumpy ride! There is no doubt about it. The tone of today’s texts is ominous. The warnings are dire, and they are jarring to our ears (especially if they have already heard carols ringing in the stores mid-November). But the baptized know how to live in the meantime. The baptized are strengthened for the living of these days in word and sacrament. We live in the hope threaded throughout Jesus’ words about the end times, and we rally around the invitation of the apostle: “Do not be weary in doing what is right.”
