Trinity Sunday, the first Sunday following Pentecost, has been kept since the tenth century as a special celebration of the mystery of the triune God. When we say God is the triune God, we are saying something about who God is beyond, before, and after the universe: that there is community within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul’s words today. When we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba (an everyday, intimate parental address), the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God the same communal relationship Jesus has with the one who sent him. Often on this highly theological day, we get lost in trying to understand the Great Three-in-One. Perhaps today instead we might simply muse in the Mystery that is God – simultaneously beyond our understanding and yet as close as our very breath!
