In Sunday’s first reading God invites all who are hungry or thirsty to receive food and drink without cost. In the Gospel, Jesus feeds the hungry multitude and reveals the abundance of God. Jesus is able to feed us abundantly, even with scraps. It can be hard to relax and trust God to take care of us and nourish us with the mere scraps we often see around us. We panic and take matters into our own hands instead of trusting. Yet, just as Jesus nourished the crowds on a hillside, so he still nourishes us at the altar. In the eucharistic meal we are reminded of the countercultural message of God’s abundance in a world that operates on scarcity. Sunday, Pastor Susie preaches the good news and Pastor Armin invites us to share the bread of life so that we can go out into a world of scarcity and give ourselves away as bread for the hungry.
