Barn Raising or Barn Razing?

barn falling over

“All is vanity and a chasing after wind,” says Ecclesiastes, yet we chase wealth like it will last forever. Into this ancient and modern reality, Jesus tells the parable of the rich fool, who, despite his great wealth, is poor in every other way, eating alone, and even dying alone. In Jesus’ depiction of this fool, our own sinful hearts are exposed. We, too, at times vainly chase after more wealth, sacrificing right relationship with God and neighbor in the process. Jesus uses this parable to warn against identifying the worth of our lives with the value of our possessions. Beginning today, our Stewardship Sundays invite us to consider what it means “to be rich toward God.” Perhaps it means to Boldly Live and be Inspired to Give rather than storing up more for ourselves. Perhaps it means it’s time for a barn razing rather than evermore barn raising!
