This Sunday’s festival is a bridge between the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany cycle that comes to a close today and the Lent-Easter cycle that begins on Wednesday. On a high mountain Jesus is revealed as God’s beloved Son, echoing the words at his baptism. Jesus’ divinity is shown forth on the Mount of Transfiguration, and by next Sunday we are in Lent, when his humanity is seen as he goes to die upon Mount Calvary. As we turn this week to Ash Wednesday and our yearly baptismal journey from Lent to Easter, this glowing vision of Jesus’ glory sustains us as he faces his impending death in Jerusalem and reminds us to get up and not be afraid.
