God’s word is like the rain that waters the earth and brings forth vegetation (Isaiah 55). It is also like the sower who scatters seed indiscriminately (Matthew 13). God’s word is like seeds sown in the earth. Even from what appears to be little, dormant, or dead, God promises a harvest. While the parable invites us to consider when we have been each type of soil, it is also a vivid reminder of all God has overcome—rocks, scorching sun, thorns, and snatching—to propagate good news. God graciously and miraculously brings forth seeds of faith in the most inhospitable of places. In worship the soil of our lives become fertile ground for at the baptismal font we are watered with grace and at the Lord’s table we are fed with the bread of life, that we may bear fruit in the world.
