Pickleball Y’all – Empty Nesters Group Outing

Eleven “empty nesters” gathered on Sunday (10/5/2025) afternoon for a fun and energetic pickleball outing at Austin Pickle Ranch. Austin Pickle Ranch was started here in Austin by the Klitch family of Tarrytown. We didn’t know it at the time, but were thrilled to learn we were not only having a great time together, but also supporting a local business.

Julie writes – Some of us had never played before and others just a little bit, so we began with a short lesson to learn the basics-how to serve, score, and position ourselves on the court.

Many of us botched our first few volleys and tried to remember when to stay out of the “kitchen.” However, it didn’t take long for everyone to get the hang of it, and the competitive  spirit to kick in.

After learning the ropes, we divided into teams and played round-robin style, switching teams and partners after each game.

By the end of the afternoon, we were all a little tired realizing that we had gotten a workout on the court. The outing not only introduced some of us to a new sport, but also brought joy from spending time in fellowship with our TLLC community.

Tim writes: I’m in for another session!

Dean writes: I thought it was great. I had a good time. My back hand was sore the next day. Who would have thought I had a muscle there. I loved the venue. I would play pickleball again. I think the coach was great. It really helped me understand the game. All in all I had a great time!

Dennis writes: Really happy to learn to play this very popular sport! The coaching was excellent, combining the basics of the game along with playing an actual game. I discovered a couple of my weaknesses that I need to work on. Would do it again, but need to brush up on the rules and methos of keeping score.

Terri writes: I had been wanting to try pickle ball for a while, so this was a really great opportunity with a fun group of people, laid back atmosphere, and an unexpected surprise and delight, a coach. Who knew scoring could be so complicated?! The venue was ideal for a group to be active and socialize at the same time.

We will be getting together again for more pickleball! Watch the announcements for out next outing. Whether you have played before or want to learn, there is a place for you here. Be sure to sign up early because although we have unlimited fun, the space is limited. See you on the court!
