When we encounter the risen Jesus, we are changed and will never be the same. This week’s gospel, much like “The Walk to Emmaus Story,” describes a post-resurrection appearance by Jesus that outlines the life of the church and how Jesus continues to appear in our midst. As the disciples return to their ordinary lives of fishing, Jesus appears along the shoreline inviting them to eat breakfast with him. Wading in the water (remembering baptism) and eating with Jesus (celebrating holy communion) is the pattern of our weekly encounter with the risen Christ. Jesus asks us again and again, “Do you love me,” offering forgiveness for the times we deny him (as Peter did). Then Jesus invites us to follow him (sending), bringing the Easter life and the good news of God’s triumphant love to others.
