The Sermon on the Mount: A Beginner’s Guide to the Kingdom of Heaven

Six week class: June 7/8, 2023 – July 12/13, 2023

Wednesdays Online @ 1pm
Thursdays @ 1pm, Community Classroom

Jesus’ sermon in Matthew 5-7 contains some of his most profound and most memorable teachings. What might these teachings have mean to his first disciples, and how do they speak across the centuries to listeners today? How, if we pay careful attention to his words, does Jesus provide us a road map to living as God would have us live? Join Pastor Danielle for this 6-week course using Dr. Amy-Jill Levine’s book by the same name.

Grab your favorite Bible and come for either class or join us for both to steward the gift of fellowship!  Book Info

Class Schedule:

June 7/8

This week we will discuss the Introduction and Chapter 1 – The Beatitudes along with studying Matthew 4:23-5:12 as we explore how the Sermon on the Mount is a “beginner’s guide” of sorts to what living in the kingdom of heaven actually looks like – right here on earth as well as what this “sermon” sounded like to Jesus’ first disciples, who were all Jewish.

June 14/15

This week we will discuss Chapter 2 – The Extensions along with studying Matthew 5:13-48 as we explore how the Sermon on the Mount is a “beginner’s guide” of sorts to what living in the kingdom of heaven actually looks like – right here on earth as well as why these are not “antitheses” in Levine’s opinion but rather “extensions”.

June 21/22

This week we will discuss Chapter 3 – Practicing Piety along with studying Matthew 5:13-16 & 6:1-8, 16-18 as we explore how the Sermon on the Mount is a “beginner’s guide” to what living in the kingdom of heaven actually looks like as well as why Levine says piety is not “works righteousness” and shouldn’t have a negative connotation for us as Lutherans.

June 28/29

postponed to next week

July 5/6

This week we will discuss Chapter 4 – Lord’s Prayer along with studying Matthew 6:9-15 as we explore how the Sermon on the Mount is a “beginner’s guide” to what living in the kingdom of heaven actually looks like as well as why Levine says, “‘Amen’ is the best response” to this prayer.

July 12/13

This week we will discuss Chapter 5 – Finding Your Treasure – along with studying Matthew 6:19-7:5 as we explore how the Sermon on the Mount is a “beginner’s guide” to what living in the kingdom of heaven actually looks like and how that kingdom redefines treasure.

July 19/20

This week we will discuss Chapter 6 – Living into the Kingdom – along with studying Matthew 7:6-27 as we explore how the Sermon on the Mount is a “beginner’s guide” to what living in the kingdom of heaven actually looks like and how we still can live into that kingdom 2000 years later.
