In April 2023, Mary Martha Friendship Group and other TLLC members toured the Mariposa Family Learning Center in southeast Austin.
Mariposa Board Chair (and TLLC member) Jan Richards welcomed our group. She explained that Mariposa was started as a ministry of Austin City Lutherans, but is now a separate non-profit for child care licensing reasons. Mariposa has two classrooms and is licensed for up to 20 children (6 months to age 4).
For safety and privacy reasons, we did not enter the classroom building. The recently-remodeled community center building is used by the Montopolis neighbors for birthday parties, quinceaneros, and other gatherings. This building also contains offices and a resource room for Mariposa.
Since Mariposa is located in an Austin city park (Civitan Neighborhood Park), their focus is on outdoor learning.
Families pay tuition as they are able, so Mariposa relies on generous donors to make up the difference.
In May 2023, Austin City Lutherans in partnership with Mariposa Family Learning Center launched a fundraising campaign.
The May Flowers fundraising campaign for Mariposa Family Learning Center has been matched by a generous donor up to $50,000 – that means you can DOUBLE your impact by giving! Our goal is to raise funds to provide tuition subsidies, support teacher training and education, expand our facilities and capacity, and continue providing high-quality education to the children of our community. With your help, we can make a difference in the lives of our students and their families. Join us in this challenge and let’s see what we can do together!
