You Cannot Serve God and Wealth

god and wealth cross

Today we are invited to consider what it means to be managers or stewards (rather than owners) of all that we have. In the gospel, Jesus tells the story of a dishonest manager. This manager’s behavior is not surprising – he operates by the world’s rules rather than by those of the kingdom. What is surprising in the parable is the behavior of the boss who shows mercy. What is also surprising is Jesus’ encouragement that we be such shrewd stewards given that we are managers of a far more valuable household – the kin-dom of God. Apart from the generosity of God we have nothing—we are nothing. By God’s gracious favor we have everything we need so we can share it freely with others.
